There’s probably not a gamer in the world these days that hasn’t at least heard of Minecraft – with a completely customizable world composed entirely of voxels that you can put together and take apart however you please, the popular game allows you to let your creativity run wild, and the fun is practically endless.
A journey through unknown worlds Like always, I start off in an unexplored, randomly-generated world, with absolutely nothing on me. They give you a crate with a few tools to get started, though, so I can get right to work collecting wood and exploring the area. I’m lucky enough to run across a nearby village where I’m able to get something to eat. It gets dark really quickly, though, so I flee into one of the houses in order to avoid the monsters that prowl about the world at night. In the morning I set out once again, and soon find a cave where I’m able to get important materials like coal and iron. The cave, too, is lousy with creepers, spiders, and other monsters, so I end up having to fight for my life. Fortunately, I manage to survive the encounter and make it back to the surface. Now that I have a few building materials in my inventory, I find a nice spot of land to build my first house, and start working on it right away.
This all sounds like a typical Minecraft experience, and that’s what it is. What we’re dealing with, however, is the beta version of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, a slimmed down version of the game developed exclusively for Microsoft’s new operating system that nevertheless has a few new features of its own. What what separates it from the standard PC version?
Uh oh, I can’t build a stone staircase!
First off, Windows 10 Edition isn’t based on Java, which means that it runs really smoothly. If you don’t have a high-performance machine, this version might be a better choice, as the regular version of Minecraft can be pretty taxing on your system. The Windows 10 version also allows you to play with people who only have the mobile Pocket Edition. In addition to that, you can switch between control inputs between keyboard, controller, and touch screen, which is another feature that’s not available in the standard version. Essentially, Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition is pretty much Pocket Edition for Windows instead of mobile devices, and like Pocket Edition it doesn't have certain features available in the standard version. According to the developers at Mojang, however, the new version is going to be expanded via periodic updates, and if you’ve followed Minecraft over the past few years, then you know the developers are serious when it comes to improving the game.Nevertheless, Windows 10 Edition has some pretty serious drawbacks, not least of which is the fact that it doesn’t support user modifications. This means you won’t be able to download any of the popular texture packs or other mods that add useful features to the game. This is a big deal too, since Minecraft really is a game that thrives on and profits from a highly active modding community that is entirely absent here. So if you like playing Minecraft with mods, then you’re just going to have to do without if you get Windows 10 Edition.
