About Special Effect Founded in 2007, SpecialEffect is a UK-based charity that was born from a noticeable gap in support for disabled young people in accessing games, as well as a lack of perceived empathy for the importance games play in young lives.
SpecialEffect later pioneered the use of technologies like Eye Gaze (eye-tracking for input), and working with major players such as Microsoft, Sony, and Logitech to produce adapted controllers and other assistive devices. This collaboration has always been at the heart of SpecialEffect's ethos, consistently and freely sharing expertise and knowledge with developers and studios to incorporate accessibility features in games, and contributing to a more inclusive gaming landscape.
In 2024, SpecialEffect received a BAFTA Special Award. The award which recognises outstanding contributions to games, film and television, is one of the highest accolades bestowed by BAFTA.
